St. Andrew’s Net Connectors Kickoff Meeting an inspiring success!
On Tuesday evening, March 2nd, St. Andrew’s celebrated the birth of a new group which will provide a place where parishioners can learn about each other’s vocations, connections and concerns as they relate to the economic downturn and unemployment. The Men’s Group and Outreach Committee pitched in to make a delicious potluck supper and provide a wonderful guest speaker—the Rev. Michael Schuler of First Unitarian Society—who gave an inspiring talk about his new book, “Making the Good Life Last—Four Keys to Sustainable Living”. Group table discussions followed, during which we shared our stories about how the current economy has affected us. 38 of us left inspired and nourished. If you missed it, join us at our next event in late April.
SPRING SWEETS: Our annual Spring Sweets event, like the change of seasons, is just around the corner. The 2010 Spring Sweets benefit and auction for the Appalachia Service Project mission trip will be held this year on Sunday evening, April 18, at our Lady Queen of Peace church. Watch for further announcements. Tickets will go on sale later in March. HOLD THE DATE for this fun evening of fellowship and high stakes bidding on luscious treats, tickets to sports events, and hand crafted items made by St. Andrew's parishioners. Al l proceeds raised support our youth group's annual trip to Appalachia to help repair substandard housing for low income families through the work of the Appalachia Service Project

Outreach Reflections on the Gospel
7 March 2010 - Luke 13:1-9 -- Reaching Out in Encouragement
The beginning of this passage paints a scary picture of some horrible events
with Jesus telling His listeners twice to repent or perish. Wait. Scary? How
about hopeful! As Christians, we are taught and believe that it is through the
love and grace of God that we can repent and be saved. If we don’t repent and
live our lives as we are called to, we will indeed perish. But, what about the fig
tree? How can a tree repent? Does the tree even know it’s doing anything that requires repentance? Is it likely that the tree doesn’t know that not producing fruit is a sign it might not productive or worthy of life. The gardener wants to nurture it some more…encourage it to bear fruit. So, does Jesus with us. He nurtures us, not with manure, but with love so that we can also bear fruit. The
gardener is reaching out to the tree. It seems that the gardener suggests that it might not be the tree’s fault that it doesn’t bear fruit. Is it a person’s fault they are un/under-employed, homeless, hungry? Do we have the right to say “I know this tree is no good…cut it down; I know these people are no good…they deserve to be un/underemployed, homeless, hungry”? We are called to be like the gardener and to remember that it is never too late to bear fruit.

Prayers of the People for March 7, 2010 Lord, we look for you, we long for you; open our eyes to your coming. May the church be an instrument of justice and peace. Heal our faults and divisions, Lord, and make us fruitful witnesses to your redeeming love.
Intercessor: Lord, in your love and mercy, People: hear us and help us.
Creator God, as you have given us this world to live in, help us to use its resources in accordance with your will. We pray for those who supply our food and our daily needs, and for those who do research on agriculture, energy use, and sustainability. Bless and guide the leaders of our state and nation, that they may promote the common good, working for economic justice and an end to hunger and homelessness.
Intercessor: Lord, in your love and mercy, People: hear us and help us.
We give thanks for our homes and loved ones, and for our neighborhoods and workplaces. May we be faithful in our dealings and sensitive to each other’s needs and hopes.
Intercessor: Lord, in your love and mercy, People: hear us and help us.
Lord of love, we remember before you those who are suffering because of earthquakes, drought, flood, or war. We pray for refugees, immigrants, and prisoners, and for all who are powerless to avoid exploitation and abuse. We remember those who are bereaved, and those who need healing from illness or injury.
Intercessor: Lord, in your love and mercy, People: hear us and help us.
Lord, you protect us from all evil. We pray for those who are facing death and for our loved ones departed, that you will bring them into the fullness of joy in your kingdom.
Intercessor: Lord, in your love and mercy, People: hear us and help us.
We remember those for whom our prayers have been requested this week: . . .
Intercessor: Lord, in your love and mercy, People: hear us and help us.
Members of the congregation are invited to add their own prayers of intercession and thanksgiving, either silently or aloud.

Today’s In-Gathering Recipient is the Grace Church Food Pantry:We have been supporting the Grace Church Food Pantry for several years. This year is especially important because about one out of every five people showing up at the counter are visiting the food pantry for the first time. Given the nature of the economy we are in, with no visible relief on the horizon, the percentage of newcomers could continue to rise. Our contributions are needed and appreciated so the pantry can remain viable while serving the needs of our community. Thank you in advance for your concern and your generosity.

Worship, Study, and Action: Wednesday evening, over 40 people from 4 congregations joined together for Evening Prayer, a meal, and a discussion with the Bishop about how to more fully become who God is calling us to be. Bishop Miller talked about how, both as the Church and as individual Christians, we are to engage equally in (1) weekly, communal worship, (2) Christian formation and study, (3) action through our words and deeds and service to others. He stated how it is necessary for both us and the greater faith community to worship together every Sunday morning. He suggested that we each add a time of daily prayer into our day, perhaps using the "Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families" found in the Book of Common Prayer. And the Bishop also suggested being more intentional about our own spontaneous prayers. Homework for March 3: think about what you are already doing in the three areas of Worship, Study, and Action.

Justice Reflections on the Gospel
28 Feb. 2010 Luke 13:31-35
How often do we fail to hear our Lord speaking to us? How often do we fail to see Jesus, simply because we forget to look? He may be all around, casting out demons, performing cures in those around us and in our own lives, but do we notice? Do we ever think to thank him? Do we get so busy saving the world
as best we can or simply drudging through another day that we fail to seek him or even ask his help? “How often have I desired to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And, I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’” If we fail to see, if we fail to listen, then we too are like the Jerusalem in this passage. We must learn to listen. The time is now—can you not feel the urgency? Just as the world cries out for help, God too cries out for people to listen. Jesus seeks us— true worshippers, who will follow his way rather than our own. Jesus asks us to let go of that which we so desperately cling to, that our hands may be free to cling to him instead. In so doing, we allow ourselves to be gathered to the Father. Only then, can God begin to act through us. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Repent, turn around—you just might see him.

Prayers of the People for February 28, 2010
Merciful Lord, you are a very present help in all our troubles. Teach us your ways, and show us your paths. Guide your church, so that it may lead others to behold your love and glory. We pray for all ministries of Christian education and formation, both in this parish and in the church at large.
Intercessor: Lord, we put our hope in you. People: You are our light and our salvation.
We pray for our national leaders and for others in positions of authority, that they may use their powers in accordance with your will and for the common good. We remember the victims of the earthquake in Haiti and the relief workers who are trying to help them. We pray for a just and peaceful end to the armed conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, the Sudan, and Congo, and for peace and reconciliation among all the descendants of Abraham and Sarah.
Intercessor: Lord, we put our hope in you. People: You are our light and our salvation.
We give thanks for those who have provided for us and protected us. Open our eyes to the needs of our neighbors who are homeless, hungry, or imprisoned. Make us receptive to your call and ready to do your will.
Intercessor: Lord, we put our hope in you. People: You are our light and our salvation.
Lord, you are our strength in times of weakness, our hope in times of darkness. We pray for those who have lost their jobs or fear losing them. We remember those who mourn, and those who need healing in body, mind, or spirit.
Intercessor: Lord, we put our hope in you. People: You are our light and our salvation.
We rejoice in the hope that our earthly bodies and those of our loved ones may one day become like your glorious body. Change us, Lord, and we shall be changed.
Intercessor: Lord, we put our hope in you. People: You are our light and our salvation.
We remember those for whom our prayers have been requested this week: . . .
Intercessor: Lord, we put our hope in you. People: You are our light and our salvation.
Your own prayers of thanksgiving and intercession are invited at this time, either silently or aloud.

Bishop Steven Miller, the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Milwaukee will be making an official visitation to Saint Andrew’s on May 30th and will confirm and receive people on that day.
Confirmation Classes are Forming Now! Please contact Fr. Andy ASAP if you would like to participate!
Coffee Hour Needs Your Help! Coffee hour is need of volunteers. Please consider signing up to host coffee hour for the 10:30 service. Duties include making coffee, bringing a few treats, and cleaning up afterwards. Sign up is in the parish hall. If you have any questions, please call either Kristine Lamont 233-8240 or Kate Lamont 212-8267. Thanks in advance.
Don Fleischman is preaching at Saint Francis House Tonight at 5:00 p.m! We are all invited to worship and dinner at Saint Francis House, the Episcopal Campus Ministry here at the University of Wisconsin in Madison!

St. Andrew’s Connectors Hosts a Special Event on March 2nd! St. Andrew’s Connectors group will be hosting an evening of food, conversation and a special guest speaker, Michael Schuler. CALLING ALL CHILI COOKS AND HUNGRY PARISHIONERS! Join our 2010 ASP Summer Mission Crew for the 1st Annual St. Andrew's Chili Contest on Sunday March 7 Come sample some wonderful chili made by St. Andrew's cooks and vote for your favorite by donating funds to benefit our 2010 Youth mission trip to help the Appalachia Service Project rebuild substandard housing for low income families in Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia. Here's how you can help:
*sign up as a contestant and bring some chili to share on March 7 after the 10:30 a.m service on the sign up sheet in the parish hall
*join us to eat and vote for your favorites on March 7

For questions or to sign up to bring a recipe, contact Monica Burkert-Brist at monicabrist@gmail.com or 215-9232. Sponsored by the 2010 ASP Youth Ministry and the St. Andrew's Outreach Committee
The February 28 In-Gathering Recipient is the Grace Church Food Pantry: We have been supporting the Grace Church Food Pantry for several years.
It’s time to think spring! The St. Andrew’s Garden Committee will hold an inaugural planning meeting on February 23 at 7 PM at the Newell House. All parties interested in the St. Andrew’s gardens are invited to attend. The discussion will focus on planning the Second Annual St. Andrew’s Plant Sale, and garden improvements for 2010.

"For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations." Is 61:11.
Children’s Walk Through Holy Week As a parish we experience Jesus’ last days through a series of services during Holy Week: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. Children’s Walk Through Holy Week condenses this week-long pilgrimage into an interactive multi-sensory storytelling event on a scale more readily accessible to children. The Walk will take place March 20, 9:30-12:00. We will begin together by learning the songs we will sing during the Walk. Then we will break into two groups, alternately experiencing the Walk and engaged with other seasonal activities. We will conclude with a light lunch. Please contact me to register your child or to volunteer! Ruth Kearley: family@standrews-madison.org or 729-4050
Vacation Bible School The mornings of June 14-18 are set for Vacation Bible School. Get those dates on your calendar and contact me to let me know of your child’s interest in attending and your interest in assisting! Ruth Kearley: family@standrews-madison.org or 729-4050
Church school training opportunities
We have two opportunities this month for training in the storytelling and worship approach we use in the Followers of Jesus and Worship Center classrooms. You do not need to be a church school teacher to go. St. Andrew's will pay the fee. If you are interested please contact Ruth Kearley for more information (family@standrews-madison.org, 729-4050).
Children and Worship Basic Training part I, February 27, 2010 at Trinity Presbyterian in Milwaukee: We have brought Karen Stabelfeldt, the trainer, to St, Andrew's a couple of times in the past few years to provide training. I have been to Trinity and seen Karen lead in her classroom there. It will inspire you!
Outreach Opportunity! Project Home's "Hammer With A Heart" Has Houses That Need Our Help on Saturday May 1! We are invited to volunteer, either individually or as a group, to provide free home repairs and maintenance for low-income homeowners in Dane County. Teams of skilled and community volunteers will work to make needed repairs so the homes will be safe and comfortable for 10 to 12 families. It would be great if we could form a crew from St. Andrew's who would work together on one house. A skilled crew leader and a volunteer leader will be at each home to assist the volunteers. Men, women and high school age teens are welcome to join in to help our neighbors and our community. Lunch and a free t-shirt will be provided. *** Interested??? See more information in the flyer posted on the Outreach bulletin board downstairs in the parish hall. Contact Nancy Griswold at ngchurchstuff@gmail.com, or Steve Wood at sallwd@aol.com with questions. We need to identify our crew members and apply no later than February 28th.
HELP WANTED -- MEALS ON WHEELS COORDINATOR: Did you know that people at St. Andrew's volunteer during March, July and September each year to support the Meals on Wheels program? Our St. Andrew's Meals on Wheels coordinator, Bob Spencer, has been a faithful and energetic contributor in this role for several years. Bob now wants to turn over the reins to a new coordinator as of the end of March. The only prerequisites for the coordinator position are a valid driver's license, a knack for planning, and a desire to answer the call to this ministry. If you feel called to this ministry, please contact Bob at 831-1540 for a complete job description and to arrange on the job training. We need a coordinator to schedule our current volunteers in order to ensure that we can continue to deliver meals after March 31st.

Lenten Meditations by Anne Allen
Anne Allen, the author of “Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. The First 95 Years”, has written a beautiful collection of meditations for the season of Lent. We all need guideposts and directions as we navigate our way through this season of self examination, repentance, prayer, fasting and self denial. These mediations provide a wonderful map through the wilderness. There are copies in the Narthex. Please pick one up this Sunday!

Would you be willing to tend our sheep by bringing and serving a snack one Sunday? Snack ideas and instructions will be provided to you. Many upcoming Sundays are available. Please contact Diana Hutchinson, Shepherdess, at 712-5103 or dihutchinson@yahoo.com
The Saint Andrew's sheep would like to thank the many people who have provided snacks during church school recently: John and Nancy Mullen, Linda McCart, Judy Ohm, Viki Brigham, Kay Liddicoat, Mary Hastings, Jan Mac Donald, Elayne Orr, Sherry Reames (twice!!), Elizabeth Jane Brady, Rosine Turner, Beth Wright, Susan Elder, and Tillie Ripley. The sheep (our church school children) really appreciate it. Thank you!
How has the economic downturn affected you or those you care for?
Do you wish you had a place to share your concerns?
Inspired by our Patron Saint, Andrew the fisherman, a group of parishioners began meeting in November to see how we could cast a net and gather a community around issues of employment and the economy. As ideas came together, St. Andrew’s Men’s Group and the Outreach Committee joined us to help cast the net.
ST. ANDREW’S CONNECTORS
JOIN US FOR OUR KICKOFF EVENT!
TUES. MARCH 2ND
ST. ANDREW’S PARISH HALL
6:30-8:30
SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER
Michael A. Schuler
Senior Minister, The First Unitarian Society of Madison
“HANKERING FOR A HIGHER QUALITY OF LIFE”
In his just-released book, “Making the Good Life Last—Four Keys to Sustainable Living”, he argues that sustainability must become a major consideration as we ponder the future not only of our natural environment, but of our families, finances, communities and individual physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
The evening will begin with a Potluck Supper with a Creole Gumbo provided by the Men’s Club. The St. Andrew’s Connectors will serve pie for dessert. Childcare will be provided.
In this unique partnership of three St. Andrew’s groups, our hope is that this is the first of many learnings and connections and of a new place for us to care for and support each other. Look to your left and your right—you and everyone around you has been or will be touched by job loss, unemployment or underemployment, and the issues of sustainable life and justice that are so urgent in this economic downturn.
Justice Reflections on the Gospel
21 Feb/ 2010 Luke 4:1-13
On this, the first Sunday of Lent, we find ourselves experiencing some time in the desert. The desert is not an easy place in which to survive, for survival in this inhospitable space requires knowledge of the environment and dependence on both internal and external resources. By being ever mindful of where we are and what we know to be true and correct, we will be safe. But, when we are hungry or tired or stressed and are offered an easy path out of the desert, we must be careful. It is taking that shortcut that may cause us to lose our way for the easy option is not always the right option. By staying on the path that we know is the right one, we may make a decision that doesn’t feel very comfortable for the journey seems more difficult. To live justly often means making decisions and choices that are at odds with what popular culture accepts and even expects. There is no shortcut to doing what is just. There is no easy path to working to right the wrongs that have been inflicted on those we are called to serve. But we are called to follow the example of Jesus. And when we do, we see the journey is shared by all the saints who drew upon the love and courage of Jesus that is available to all of us. And when we do, we can see the desert for what is also is: a place of incredible vastness and beauty. It is a place where we can experience the powerful presence of God in both the vastness of the wide open space and in the incredible details of life in the desert. So, let the journey continue…

Confirmation– The Bishop Is Coming to Saint Andrew’s!!!!!
The Book of Common Prayer says,
“In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.
Those baptized as adults, unless baptized with laying on of hands by a bishop, are also expected to make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism in the presence of a bishop and to receive the laying on of hands (BCP p. 412).
If you were baptized in the Episcopal Church you are a member of the Episcopal Church. If you were baptized in another tradition you can become a member of the Episcopal church by being confirmed, or if you were confirmed in a tradition with bishops in apostolic succession, by being received into the Episcopal Church. Bishop Steven Miller, the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Milwaukee will be making an official visitation to Saint Andrew’s on May 30th and will confirm and receive people on that day.
Confirmation Classes will be held on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 on March 9th and 23rd, April 13th and 27th and May 11th and 25th. We will begin with a light supper move into our program and close with Compline. This class is open to both youth and adults who are considering confirmation. It is also open to anyone who is already confirmed but who would like a “refresher” course in the Episcopal Church. Cost of the class is $40 to cover the cost of materials and supplies. Participants will be asked to bring parts of the meals. Please sign up on the sheet in the parish hall no later than February 14th so that we can order the appropriate materials. The only catch is that we are signed up to bring the dinner! Members of the Saint Francis House Community have been, and continue to be, regular attendees at both our Wednesday and Sunday morning Eucharist. The February 28 In-Gathering Recipient is the Grace Church Food Pantry:We have been supporting the Grace Church Food Pantry for several years.

Outreach Opportunity! Project Home's "Hammer With A Heart" Has Houses That Need Our Help on Saturday May 1!
Justice Reflections on the Gospel
14 Feb. 2010 Luke 9:28-36, [37-43a]
I stood at my window on the 6th floor and looked out to the lake to thank God for the great gift of this condominium in the sky. Suddenly my son the prophet was standing next to me, inviting me to look down rather than out, and asking me to consider how I could be a good neighbor to my new closest neighbors – the homeless guys who were, at that moment, lining up to request entry into the Grace Church shelter. A hazy cloud of uncertainty, uneasiness, anxiety, of total ignorance and total
incompetence engulfed me at the same moment that I also knew I was hearing Truth. A dark cloud of rationalization and excuses distorted my vision as I talked to myself about not being moved in to my new home yet, having classes that had to be prepared, and having a calendar that was already full of volunteer work in which I was really interested, and to which I was making a positive contribution. Pat the prophet looked me in the eye one day and quietly said, “You are on a journey, you need to see where it leads.” When my daughter the prophet asked how I was listening to the lives of others rather than focusing on my own agenda, I took my first hesitant steps out into my neighborhood. The prophets in my life are still speaking to me about my departure into my neighborhood, and my life is being transfigured. I am hearing God speak to me through the recently homeless and the recently incarcerated; the perennially homeless and the mentally handicapped. When I sit and listen to the homeless in the basement of the Capitol I feel both totally vulnerable AND, at the same time, I know I am standing on holy ground. I have no idea where this journey is going to lead me. I know that I am both ungrateful about being called into something for which I am incompetent and whose outcome is not known, AND very grateful for the prophets whom God sends to give me the courage to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I really want to stop feeling uncertain - I really want to know in what specific form my seeking and serving Christ in all persons, my striving for justice, and my preserving the dignity of every human being is going to take. The transfiguration reminds me that I am not called to understand, I am called to listen and to follow. Who are the prophets in your lives calling you to depart?

This Week in the Adult Forum: We will consider what it means to turn study into a spiritual discipline -- rather than a chore! If you'd like to do some reading to get you thinking about this topic, check out the essays in the book Spiritual Classics on study.
Next Week in the Adult Forum: Life is short. Why add rules? Jane Cooley will lead us in a discussion about the value of developing one's own rule of life.
Adult Forum Continues with a Focus on Christian Ethics during Lent
During the first three weeks of Lent, we will be using a 'module' from the Just Faith series to consider environmental issues from a Christian perspective. Our forums will be 'multi-media,' featuring video clips, article excerpts, and case studies -- as well as discussions of our own responses to this important topic.
Feb. 21 -- Stewards of the Earth - our moral responsibility to keep the earth from both a religious and scientific perspective..
Feb. 28 -- Impact of Climate Change on Church Ministries -- some predictions and some case studies

Holy Baptism…will be offered at Saint Andrew’s on Sunday February 14th. The next opportunity for Baptism will be at the Easter Vigil on April 3rd. If you would like to be baptized, or have a child to be baptized, please contact Father Andy or Deacon Susan as soon as possible!
Confirmation– The Bishop Is Coming to Saint Andrew’s!!!!
If you have any questions please contact Fr. Andy.

The Community of Hope program creates Christian communities of lay volunteer pastoral care givers who are united in prayer, shaped by Benedictine spirituality, and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries. Through a 12-week training course, participants explore God's call in our lives. Each participant explores a "rule of life", practices silence and Christian meditation, and attends weekly meetings to learn about pastoral care practices such as listening skills, confidentiality, discovering who you are, coping with grief and loss, and more. The first Madison-area Community of Hope training will commence Thursday, February 11, 2010, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. for 12 weeks at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, located on University Avenue at Allen Boulevard. Applications are available now; the modest registration fee is $100. Justice Reflections on the Gospel
February 7, 2010—Luke 5:1-11
Gone Fishin’ What does it mean to be fishers of men? Ask a group of Sunday School children and the response will be something like a scrunched up face and a “Yuck” or maybe “That’s weird. Why would you fish for people? We don’t eat people. We eat fish.” Certainly there would be laughter. Ask a group of adults and you might get a thoughtful look and a and a “Hmmmmm.” What is the right answer? It’s one that puts us in a rather uncomfortable place of not/being able to answer. Because the answer is both simple and profound. It is challenging and maybe a little frightening. It is the response to the call of Jesus to discipleship. It is us feeling like Simon Peter, feeling unworthy to live this call and being afraid of what it means to give up our lives of comfort and safety to move out into the world and meet people where they are. And love them in that space. But it also requires absolute acknowledgement of our faith in the love of Jesus and the even more sure and strong safe place we are in, in the Kingdom of God, as we are the disciples we are called to be. Do not be afraid, for now you will be catching people.

This Week in the Adult Forum: Jane Cooley will lead us in a discussion of "the sacrament of the present moment." Curious? Intrigued? Come learn more.
Next Week in the Adult Forum: We will consider what it means to turn study into a spiritual discipline -- rather than a chore! If you'd like to do some reading to get you thinking about this topic, check out the essays in the book Spiritual Classics on study.

Support for the People in Haiti
In the last two weeks we have given $8,878.63 in Open Plate offerings to Episcopal Relief and Development in Haiti. We “sold” Singing Rooster Coffee in front of Trader Joe’s and raised $1,200 and people at Saint Andrew’s bought lots and lots of coffee themselves generating even more money for the Diocesan Haiti Project. This Saturday, at 11:00 a.m., Leigh Vicens will be ordained to the Priesthood at Saint Andrew’s. The offering at an ordination normally goes into the discretionary account of the newly ordained priest. Leigh has asked that today’s offering be given to ERD for their relief work in Haiti! Thanks be to God for the spirit of care and generosity in this place!
The Ordination of a Priest!
It’s not too late to contribute towards the Communion Set that we are giving to Leigh in celebration of her ministry among us and her ordination on January 30th! Please write “Leigh Vicens, Ordination Gift” in the memo line of your check.
Confirmation
If you have any questions please contact Fr. Andy.

COMMUNITY OF HOPE: If you have been pondering what to do for your Lenten discipline and personal growth this year, or wish to discover your spiritual gifts for ministry, here is a marvelous opportunity! If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Deacon Carol Smith at csmith@carthage.edu or 608-230-6888. A national program that started in Texas in 1994, St. Bartholomew's in Pewaukee has conducted this very successfully for several years. It is the ideal opportunity to deepen your personal faith and discern your path for living out that faith in the world

Justice Reflections on the Gospel
January 31, 2010 Luke 4:21-30
Walking the Walk
In his book entitled Stages of Faith Development (1981), James Fowler describes Stage Five as that level where the imperatives of absolute love and justice, the brotherhood of all people, and an inclusive and fulfilled human community are so clear that folks at that level are totally engaged in spending, and being spent for, the transformation of the present reality into that transcendent actuality. Level Five folks are disciplined, activist incarnations of the imperatives of absolute love and justice. Fowler points out that many persons in this stage die at the hands of those whom they hope to change. Absolute love and justice crosses national boundaries and local societal norms. Those who interfere with “the way things are” experience societal “push back” to restore things to normalcy. That push back can lead to death if a person simply will not choose to “mend their ways” and return to the way things are. Fowler considers Ghandi, King, Mother Teresa, Bonhoeffer and Thomas Merton to be representatives of this stage. Jesus IS the activist incarnation of the imperatives of absolute love and justice, and he makes that position clear at the very beginning of his ministry when he talks about THE prophets (Elijah and Elisha) being sent to Sidon and Syria (the whole human race) rather than just to Israel. Push Back was immediate and violent – Jesus barely escaped with his life. We have made promises about seeking and serving Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves, striving for justice and truth, preserving the dignity of al human beings. Jesus has shown us what it means to live into those promises. We must choose how to respond.

Prayers of the People for January 31, 2010
Our Blessed Lord has commanded us to hear His voice, to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. As we look for guidance on our earthly journey, we pray that we will be receptive to His call.
We give thanks for all who seek to walk in the way of the Lord. We pray for our clergy and others who teach us the faith by word and action. We pray for all seekers who long for God’s love and for newcomers in our parish. Lord, may our church be open and welcoming to all. May your voice guide us in all we do.
Intercessor: Open our ears, Lord,
People: and let us hear your call
We remember all who watch and wait and weep this day, longing for freedom from oppression. Bless all who work for peace, liberty and justice at home and abroad. Give your people the will and courage to value your love and guidance in all they do.
Intercessor: Open our ears, Lord,
People: and let us hear your call.
We pray for our community and neighborhoods, for peace and harmony in all our dealings. Remove from us all prejudice and injustice, and raise up among us those who will labor for the good of all. Lord, make us quick to love and serve our neighbors.
Intercessor: Open our ears, Lord
People: and let us hear your call.
We pray for refugees and the poor of the world, and for all who have become discouraged. We remember especially the people of Haiti and all those striving to help them. May the victims and care-givers alike feel the love of God and the guidance of Jesus in all their struggles. May the love of God bring them joy in the midst of their woes.
Intercessors: Open our ears, Lord
People: and let us hear your call.
We pray for those who have died. May they rejoice in the fullness of life eternal, and may grieving families be blessed with the comfort of the Lord.
Intercessor: Open our ears, Lord
People: and let us hear your call.
We remember those for whom our prayers have been requested this week: . . .
Intercessor: Open our ears, Lord
People: and let us hear your call.
[Your own prayers of intercession and thanksgiving are invited at this time, either silently or aloud.]

Confirmation
If you have any questions please contact Fr. Andy.
Men’s Ministry
It is time for the Men's Group to break out of hibernation and meet again. Please put January 28th, (Sorry it is a Thursday but vestry is on Wednesday) from 6:30 - 8:00 pm on your calendar for a meeting and social time. We will meet at the Newell House, please note the electric circuit has been run to the fridge in the Newell House in case you need to keep a beverage cool (not that you couldn't stick it in the snow).
We are planning to have a pre-lenten breakfast on February 13th (a Saturday) at the church. We have some recipes for New Orleans dishes which will provide us with a touch of Mardi Gras without having to pay the air fare. It will be in the morning, not too early, with more details for follow.
We are thinking of a program, morning prayer, or just getting together for breakfast - so if you have an opinion, any suggestions or ideas, let us know sooner than later. We will update you as we get closer to the date, but please mark your calendars.
Mark Your Calendars! St. Andrew’s Connector’s Meeting: January 26th!
The next meeting of the St Andrew's Connectors Committee will be Tuesday, January 26th at 7 PM in the parish hall. Please join us as we plan our all parish gathering. Andy Porter and Tom Mosgaller will provide the pie and coffee, you provide the appetite! The Connectors is an effort to support each other as Christians seeking to support one another during times of rethinking careers, unemployment and underemployment. One of the gifts each of us has is we all know other people, and through those relationships we have networks. Maybe people you know could help someone else who is reconsidering their career options or seeking employment. By supporting one another we become stronger as a community of St Andrews. If you have questions please contact Andy Porter, Janet Hyde, Henry Peters, or Tom Mosgaller.

Via Media Series: The Via Media series at Grace Episcopal Church began Wednesday evening (January 20th) with a group of nine people. After watching a short video with theologians and prominent Episcopalians discussing The Via Media: The Middle Road (a term used to describe the inclusiveness of the Episcopal Church), the group discussed several different questions about their own experiences of inclusiveness as well as times when they felt excluded in church. The evening ended with a short, but lovely, service of Compline. To join in with the conversation, come to Grace Episcopal Church (116 W Washington Ave) this Wednesday (January 27th). The conversation will continue around the topic of God and Creation: The Abundance of God's Goodness.
Justice Reflections on the Gospel
January 24, 2010 Luke 4:14-21
Choosing to Respond
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.” After reading this text from Isaiah, Jesus sits down. The people stare at him. They can feel it in their bones that something new is happening. Maybe Jesus thought the scripture said it all, so he says simply, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” These words are really quite stunning. What can he possibly mean to say the scripture has been fulfilled? Jesus is announcing a new order, in which the oppressed go free, but we know that even today many are oppressed, many still cannot see, and many are held captive by so many things—money or the lack thereof and innumerable fears. Did Jesus get it wrong? We speak of Jesus as the fulfillment of the scripture, but do we really think about what this means for us? In learning to trust that the scripture has been fulfilled in Jesus, we find ourselves freed from the bonds that would hold us captive. Once freed from our bonds, even if only for a moment, we can join Jesus and help to bring the new order into being. Jesus has shown us the way and empowered us to bring good news to the poor, proclaim recovery of sight to the blind and let the prisoners go free. We choose how to respond. The scripture has been fulfilled in our hearing.

Prayers of the People for January 24, 2010
Lord of all joy, you are our hope and our strength, a very present help in all troubles. We give thanks for all who tell of your love by translating the Scriptures, preaching the word, or teaching the faith.
Intercessor: Lord, renew your people
People: and sustain us by your mighty power.
God of all comfort, we beseech you to give strength and hope to the people of Haiti. Your word tells us that you will be with us, that you will strengthen us and uphold us with your victorious right hand. Dear Lord, comfort those who have lost their loved ones, their homes, and all their possessions. Give strength and wisdom to the thousands of relief workers who have rushed to help. Enable them to clear the roads and coordinate their efforts so that food, clean water, and medical care can reach all the people who need them.
Intercessor: Lord, renew your people
People: and sustain us by your mighty power.
God of compassion, we thank you for the outpouring of assistance to Haiti from people around the world. We give thanks for the doctors and nurses, soldiers and relief workers from many nations who have gone to help in person, and for Episcopal Relief and Development and all the other agencies that are gathering donations and putting them to work. Help us all to respond with compassion and generosity to those in need.
Intercessor: Lord, renew your people
People: and sustain us by your mighty power.
God of mercy, we remember before you the children of Haiti who are now orphans and the parents who are now childless, and we remember those in our own community who are grieving for those they love. We also pray for those who are sick or injured, especially those who have no one to care for them.
Intercessor: Lord, renew your people
People: and sustain us by your mighty power.
Dear Lord, we give you thanks for the assurance that not even death can separate us from your love. We pray for those who have died, that they may rest in your love and your peace.
Intercessor: Lord, renew your people
People: and sustain us by your mighty power.
We remember those for whom our prayers have been requested this week: . . .
Intercessor: Lord, renew your people
People: and sustain us by your mighty power.
(Your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving are invited at this time, either silently or aloud.)

In Gathering for Haiti Sunday December 17th and 24th
The open plate offering on the 24th was scheduled to go to the Clergy Discretionary Fund but, in light of the overwhelming need in Haiti and the Bishop’s request that all the parishes of the Diocese offer aid and support, we have decided to give the open plate offering both this Sunday the 17th and next Sunday the 24th to Episcopal Relief and Development for their ministry and work with and among the people of Haiti. Please write your checks to Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and put ERD – Haiti in the memo line. This will allow us to send a single check to the Diocese and they in turn will be able to send a single check to ERD thereby expediting this process. Please note that all cash in the offering for the next two weeks, unless it is in an envelope and clearly marked for another purpose, will also go to help the people in Haiti.
Calling all young adults and those young at heart! Young Adult Ministry Meeting Today! Mark your calendars for the Young Adult Ministry planning meeting on Sunday, January 17 after the 10:30 service. Email Claire Clemens (cpoppe@wisc.edu) to RSVP, share agenda items, and let her know about any dietary restrictions. We'd love it if you'd join us!

Confirmation
If you have any questoins please contact Fr. Andy.

THE CHURCH AT WORK IN THE WORLD
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
We thank you, O Lord, for all who enrich our world by their talents and abilities. We pray for healing ministries and those with the gift of healing, for visionaries and those who work to improve our world. Help us all to use the gifts you have given us for the benefit of others and to your glory. We pray for the clergy, lay leaders, and people of this parish, and for the whole church.
Intercessor: Lord, come to us, who are empty: People: fill us with your love.
Lord, who has given us this world and all that is in it, help us to use its resources properly; let us not waste what should be saved for the future, or pollute the earth, air, or water. Bless all who seek to conserve and to protect our natural resources. We pray for people whose crops have failed, and for all who live in desert places.
Intercessor: Lord, come to us, who are empty: People: fill us with your love.
We rejoice, O God, that you delight in us. You will not leave us desolate: you are God who renews and restores your creation. Teach us to delight in each other and care for each other. We pray for those who are in love, those preparing for marriage, and those who are struggling in their relationships.
Intercessor: Lord, come to us, who are empty: People: fill us with your love.
We remember before you all who feel unwanted, inadequate, or hopeless. We pray for those unable to find employment, those grieving for loved ones, and those in any kind of trouble or danger.
Intercessor: Lord, come to us, who are empty: People: fill us with your love.
We rejoice with all who have been received into the fullness of your kingdom, restored and renewed by your love and saving power. We pray for our loved ones departed.
Intercessor: Lord, come to us, who are empty: People: fill us with your love.
We remember those for whom our prayers have been requested this week:
Intercessor: Lord, come to us, who are empty: People: fill us with your love.
Your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving are invited at this time, either silently or aloud.
Justice Reflections on the Gospel
January 17, 20010 John 2:1-11
The World Turned On Its Head
The wedding in Cana announces the coming of the Kingdom in a way some modern Christians might struggle to reconcile with their image of Jesus as moral leader, even teetotaler. In fact, the miracle is ushered in by his mother’s prompting, with a reluctant Jesus himself resisting as his “time had not yet come”...but indeed it had. The beauty of this miracle lies in its inversion of worldly expectations: you’re supposed to save the choice stuff for last, when the guests are already drunk. Instead we are treated to extravagant abundance...more than we ever expected! Sometimes our vision and expectation of justice seeks merely to restore balance, to “right the wrongs.” Jesus instead announces a complete social inversion, wherein the last are first and water becomes the finest wine--in ceremonial purification vessels, no less. Jesus would have us throw open the cabinet with the finest serving vessels...the treasured family china...and use it to serve those in need.

This Week in the Adult Forum We will begin our adult forum series on prayer and contemplative spirituality with a visit from Father Gregory of the Order of Julian of Norwich, who will be our guest speaker -- as well as preacher! Come here him share some of the insights he has gained from living the monastic life.
In-Gathering Sunday -- January 24 On January 24th, the recipient of our in-gathering of donations will be our St. Andrew's Clergy Discretionary Fund. The money is used to help clients of Hospitality House (an affiliate of Porchlight) who need short term financial assistance. Some examples of financial assistance are: bus passes, car repairs, phone bills, heating bills, and medical supplies. As we all know, paying heating bills is very important this time of year, when requests for assistance increase significantly. For everyone blessed with reliable transportation and a warm place to live, give thanks...and please give whatever you can to this in-gathering so that our clergy may continue to help meet the needs of people in our community.
If you are contributing by check, please make your check out to St. Andrews with "Clergy Discretionary Fund" in the memo line. The loose plate offering is also part of the in-gathering.
Thanks to all that helped on Dungaree Sunday!
We would like to thank everyone who made our second Dungaree Sunday a success. Thanks to the efforts of many, including those who had travel plans that took them away from the area on the 20th but helped in the planning and preparations, we were able to get the church ready for Christmas, replace a sink in the bathroom outside the deacon's office, and finish preparations for the pageant. We would like to thank Mark Heinritz who led the plumbing efforts to replace the sink, the Alter Guild who decorated the sanctuary, and the youth group who finished painting the sets for the pageant. Many hands made for light labor and all who helped joined in a meal before heading out to finish their own holiday preparations. Thanks to all who made the day a success!
Employment Connections Group: Are you or someone you care about unemployed or do you want to connect with our parish community on work and career topics? St. Andrew’s is starting a program series to strengthen our parish community by connecting folks who are interested in these topics and we need a few excited people to help. We’re meeting on January13th in the church at 7:00 p.m. to plan the first parish gathering. If this is your passion, please talk with Tom Mosgaller, Janet Hyde, Andy Porter, Susan Mueller, or Henry Peters to find out more.
Calling all artists! It's a St. Andrew's art project! We are creating our very own Stations of the Cross, and we need your help! Stations of the Cross is basically a walking meditation on the Passion of Christ. Participants stop at stations along the way that depict different scenes from the Passion (this is where you come in). Often Stations of the Cross is offered during Lent, and last year many parishioners participated in the liturgy. Please join us on Tuesday January 12 at 7:00 p.m. as we walk the stations and then spend time in prayer considering how we might offer our own gifts in a way that will enhance other’s appreciation and experience of this powerful liturgy. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Andy (rector@standrews-madison.org) or Jane Cooley (janeccooley@gmail.com).
Calling all young adults and those young at heart! Mark your calendars for the Young Adult Ministry planning meeting on Sunday, January 17 after the 10:30 service. We'll meet downstairs for lunch and to talk about YAM leadership, future meeting dates and activities, and overall goals for the group. Email Claire Clemens (cpoppe@wisc.edu) to RSVP, share agenda items, and let her know about any dietary restrictions. We'd love it if you'd join us!
Julian Gathering The next Julian Gathering is next Wednesday evening, January 13, 7 - 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison. The choir resumes rehearsals that evening, and we'll be experimenting with scheduling and spaces so that everyone has an appropriate place to meet. Please dress warmly; until we get this worked out, we may be in the unheated sanctuary for still prayer or in the lower level, which is cooler.
Lenten Retreat: The Order of Julian of Norwich will be leading a Lenten retreat at St. Dunstan's on March 6, 9 am - 3 pm. Watch the announcements for more information.

THE CHURCH AT WORK IN THE WORLD
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Holy God, we give you thanks for all who are baptized. We praise you for our own baptism, and pray that we may know we are always in your presence. Empower your church to show that we are members of Christ and children of God. We pray for our godchildren and our godparents, and for all who have been baptized in this place.
Intercessor: Lord of light,
People: enlighten all your people.
We pray for justice among the nations. We remember those who are trying to end the fighting between Israel and the Palestinians, especially in Gaza, and all those striving for peace in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Sudan, Congo, and other war-torn lands. We pray for the people of Zimbabwe and for all who are enslaved by tyranny or crushing debt. Teach us all how to work for justice and peace.
Intercessor: Lord of light,
People: enlighten all your people.
We give thanks for parents and loved ones, and all who have been concerned with our welfare. We pray for those who have shared their lives and their faith with us.
Intercessor: Lord of light,
People: enlighten all your people.
We pray for those who suffer in mind or spirit. We remember those who are unemployed or underemployed, those who lack safe housing, those burdened by anxiety or grief for their loved ones. We remember friends and neighbors who need healing.
Intercessor: Lord of light,
People: enlighten all your people.
We give thanks for all who have been baptized and have kept the faith. We pray for our loved ones departed from us, that they may rejoice in your eternal light.
Intercessor: Lord of light,
People: enlighten all your people.
Your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving are invited at this time, either silently or aloud.
Justice Reflections on the Gospel
10 Jan 2010 Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 Don’t Just Do Something, Stand There!
John’s vision of the Messiah carries notes of violence and judgment, a winnowing of the wheat from the chaff. Yet Jesus as Messiah is announced, not through violence, but by a gentle dove descending upon him and a voice speaking, not of the actions John envisioned, but of God’s approval, simply for being who he was. How can we reconcile the Old Testament vision of John with this New Testament reality? Perhaps the wheat becomes our essential nature, that of goodness and righteousness arising out of our essence as God’s children, while the chaff of our injustice and sin is constantly burned away. By simply being and dwelling prayerfully in the Spirit, we allow Jesus to winnow the wheat from the chaff, enabling us to be for God’s justice, and letting the work of justice and love follow that being. John’s Old Testament vision of doing is both subsumed and fulfilled by Jesus’ arrival and identity, where primacy is placed on being in relationship with God and letting the actions flow from that state of being.

A Liturgy of Sending Forth for Robin Tucker
Leader:
For everything there is a season,
A time for every matter under heaven;
A time to be born and a time to die,
A time to plant and a time to pluck up what has been planted,
A time to weep and a time to laugh,
A time to mourn and a time to dance;
A time op keep silence and a time to speak,
A time to hate and a time to love,
A time for war and a time for peace.
People:
So too there is a time for movement, a new adventure, fields of service not yet touched. With love we send you forth and in the Spirit of Christ, may the world be your parish.
Leader:
We now lay hands on you as a sign and symbol that the Holy Spirit calls you forth from us to share the good news and to spread the kingdom of love among new friends in new places.
We send you forth with our love and our blessing and with deep thanksgiving for the love we have shared together in this place. May the Lord strengthen you with he might of his Spirit. May Christ dwell in your heart by faith, that you may be filled with the presence and power of God. Amen.
People:
Go into the world and respond to the love of God in all that you do. May God’s mercy, grace and peace be with you. And may you be a channel for his love to the world wherever you may be.
All: Amen

From all of us in the office we wish you and your family a very Merry
Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!
Reception after late service on Christmas Eve It has been the
custom at St. Andrew's to have a brief reception in the Parish Hall at about
11:15 pm after the Christmas Eve Eucharist, on December 24th, in order to greet
each other and to welcome family and friends from out of town. Please let us know if you can bring snacks or
cookies or if you can help set up at about 9:00 pm. Contact Peter Monkmeyer at
238-7383.
Epiphany Potluck Pageant, Sunday, January 3,
5:00-7:00pm
Come to an evening of food, fellowship and fun, candlelight, celebration
and cake! This intergenerational event begins with a potluck followed by a
scripted but impromptu Feast of Lights pageant. There’s a part for everyone –
both speaking and non-speaking – from the Holy Family to modern-day disciples
of Jesus. Just think: no rehearsals, no costumes to dig up, no time for stage
fright. Just plenty of fun for all ages. The evening concludes with the sharing
of Kings’ cakes. Sign up in the parish hall to bring main dish, side dish,
or King's cake, and/or to help with set-up and clean-up. Questions? Contact
Michelle Wyler: wylermp@yahoo.com or 354-5456.
A Christmas Book Sale! We have
several wonderful gift ideas for you and your family! Consider a copy of Saint
Andrew’s Episcopal Church: The First 95 Years as a gift for grown
children who were part of this community, for people in your family who might
share in your excitement about the community you belong to, or for someone who
you would like to invite to join us. At just $15 this book makes a great
stocking stuffer! We also have three copies of The Great Divorce,
by CS Lewis for sale. The Women’s Spirituality Group started the season
with a study of this book. A wonderful story about the afterlife that
will leave you with lots to think about! Well worth an afternoon of
reading by the fire! Finally we have five copies of Spiritual Classics:
Selected Readings on the Twelve Spiritual Disciplines. This is
the book that we have been using in the Adult Forum since the end of
October. The title may be intimidating but you quickly realize that this
is a collection of short writings that allows you to tackle these topics in
easy “bite-sized” chunks. A great way to fuel you inner fire! All of
these titles are on the table in the Parish Hall under the Office Bulletin
Board. Pick up your copies this Sunday and check off some of the names on
your Christmas List!
Calling all young adults and those young at heart!
Mark your calendars for the Young Adult Ministry planning meeting on
Sunday, January 17 after the 10:30 service. We'll meet downstairs for lunch and
to talk about YAM leadership, future meeting dates and activities, and overall
goals for the group. Email Claire Clemens (cpoppe@wisc.edu)
to RSVP, share agenda items, and let her know about any dietary restrictions.
We'd love it if you'd join us!
Calling all artists! It's a St. Andrew's art project! We
are creating our very own Stations of the Cross, and we need your
help! Stations of the Cross is basically a walking meditation
on the Passion of Christ. Participants stop at stations along the way
that depict different scenes from the Passion (this is where you come
in). Often Stations of the Cross is offered during Lent, and last year
many parishioners participated in the liturgy. Please join us on Tuesday
January 12 at 7:00 p.m. as we walk the stations and then spend time in
prayer considering how we might offer our own gifts in a way that will enhance
other’s appreciation and experience of
this powerful liturgy. If you have any
questions, contact Fr. Andy (rector@standrews-madison.org)
or Jane Cooley (janeccooley@gmail.com).
End-of-Year Contributions: All contributions that are mailed and
postmarked no later than December 31, 2009 will be 2009 contributions per IRS
regulations. They may be applied to either your 2009 pledge balance or be a
prepayment of your 2010 pledge. Please indicate a prepayment in the memo
section on your check. All contributions that are received in 2010 and/or
postmarked after December 31, 2009 will be contributions made in 2010 per IRS
regulations. They may, however, be applied to a 2009 pledge
balance. Mark Koch at treasurer@standrews-madison.org
or call the parish office and leave your name. Thank you.
Via Media series: Grace Episcopal Church will be hosting the
eight-part Via Media series in 2010. Each evening will start at 7pm with
a short video of Episcopalians discussing (and sometimes disagreeing on)
different religious topics. The participants' discussion is the majority
of the evening. Each person is given a chance to react to what he has
heard and explore what he believes. The evening will end with a short
worship service (Compline). The stand-alone topics include: God and
Creation:The Abundance of God's Goodness, God in Jesus:An Incarnational Faith,
The Bible:The Word of God for the People of God, and Thy Kingdom Come:The
Promise of Christian Hope. Come for one evening, come for more. Dates:
Wednesdays 7-8:20pm. January 20, January 27, February 3, February 10,
April 14, April 21, April 28, May 5. For more information, see Via

Reflections on the Gospel – December 2009
27 Dec.
2009 John 1:1-18 – See What it is We Are Looking At
“Amazing Grace, how sweet the
sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was
blind, but now I see.” In that hymn, John Newton, former slave ship captain,
told his story of becoming conscious of the work he was doing and learning to
see that the cargo he carried was not cargo but human beings, good creations of
God. John Newton fully understood what John the Gospel writer meant when he
wrote “What has come into being was life, and the life was the
light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not
overcome it.“ Today’s gospel once again confronts me with the reality that the light of
God that is incarnate in Jesus goes directly to those places where his creation
is vulnerable - poor, oppressed, marginalized, discriminated against,
considered less than the rest of us - and shines His light on whatever darkness
is blinding those of us who are not so vulnerable so we can truly see. Jesus
consistently brought life to those whom society had cast out by walking with
them in solidarity and reminding them, and us, that all of God’s people are
holy, are loved, and are deserving of dignity and respect. He consistently
shone the light of his truth speaking on the unjust structures that kept people
poor, disenfranchised, without voice or power to change their circumstances,
and invisible to us. He asks us to follow him.

Prayers of the People
January 3,
2010
Almighty God, we pray that the church may
proclaim your light in dark times. May we reach out to those who are in
darkness, and show forth the good news of the gospel. We pray for clergy and
for all who study the Scriptures.
Intercessor: Christ, Light of the world,
People: scatter the
darkness from before us.
We remember areas of the world where
darkness seems to triumph– communities torn apart by terrorism and revenge,
lands turned into desert by erosion and pollution, economies ruined by short-sightedness
and greed. We pray for all who seek to safeguard and restore your creation.
Intercessor: Christ, Light of the world,
People: scatter the
darkness from before us.
In sorrow we remember broken relationships–
divisions in our families, neighborhoods, and nation, acts of intolerance and
selfishness. We pray for generosity of spirit in ourselves and our communities.
Intercessor: Christ, Light of the world,
People: scatter the
darkness from before us.
We pray for all who are in fear, doubt, or
despair, and for those whose strength is failing. We remember those who are
hungry or homeless, and those who need healing.
Intercessor: Christ, Light of the world,
People: scatter the
darkness from before us.
We give thanks for the saints and for all
who have shone out as lights in our world. We pray for friends and loved ones
departed.

3 Jan 2010 Luke 2:41-52 Sitting With Our True
Teachers
When I
moved downtown and knew I needed to begin to engage the homeless men who lined
up across the street from me each evening waiting for entry into Grace Church
shelter, the first thing I did was to attend several of the dowtown information
meetings sponsored by the Madison Homeless Coalition to learn about the causes
and demographics of homelessness in Madison from the various organizations who
provided services to the homeless. When
my friend Donna moved to Madison and became concerned about the plight of the
homeless men who frequented the shelter at Grace Church and the basement of the
Capitol, she emptied herself of all thoughts, opinions and assumptions and went
directly to her teachers to learn about homelessness – the homeless themselves. She spent months just sitting in solidarity
with the homeless in the basement of the Capitol listening to them, learning
from them, and sharing in their daily struggle to live in some semblance of
dignity and respect. After more than six
months of sitting with her teachers in the temple that is the basement of the
Capitol, Donna began the Dialogues on Homelessness which became my invitation
to move from talking about the homeless to sitting in solidarity with the
homeless. Today’s gospel invites each of
us to follow Jesus’ example and put aside our assumptions, our certainty and
our opinions about the “other” in our midst, to go directly to that “other” and
sit in solidarity with them – listening to them, learning from them, sharing in
their daily struggle to live in some semblance of dignity and respect – and
then to be obedient to the call to act to restore dignity and to seek justice.
